Online Fundraisers Set Up to Help Tenants of May 3 Abbotsford Apartment Fire

Abbotsford (Sophia Northeast – BCIT Radio Arts and Journalism) – A fire that occurred Tuesday, May 3 has left many residents displaced in Abbotsford.

The fire erupted at the Tamarind Westside apartments at 30515 Cardinal Ave at 6 AM.

The resident of the apartment (approximantly 160 units and the apartments of 30525 Cardinal) were evacuated.

Tenants were able to return to the apartments of 30535 at 7 PM but it is still unclear as to when the residents of 30515 will be able to return or gather their personal belongings.

As of now, there is an ongoing investigation as to what caused the fire.

Displaced residents are asked that they check in at the reception centre at Northview Community Church at 32040 Downes Road.

The Abbotsford and Mission Emergency Support Services are working with Emergency Management BC to set up Temporary lodging, and vouchers for food, clothing, and other daily needs.

A spokesperson for the city says these services normally stay in place for 72 hours until insurance support activates but if additional assistance is required may be extended.

Also, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services working with several residents to provide facilitated access to important items such as IDs and medications.
