Provincial Health Services Authority Using Containers For Emergencies and Disasters Including Valley and Canyon Hospitals

Victoria/Fraser Valley – The Provincial Health Services Authority is expanding its sea-can initiative to help support health-care sites in remote areas in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.

PHSA’s Health Emergency Management BC (HEMBC) and Supply Chain will be sending a new 20-foot sea-can container to Fraser Canyon Hospital, and more emergency supplies to existing sea-cans at Sechelt Hospital and Power River General Hospital.  With the addition of the new sea can, there will be a total of 5 in BC (at Bella Bella Hospital, Bella Coola Hospital, Sechelt Hospital and Powell River General Hospital).

The sea cans contain items such as additional hospital beds, sleeping cots, blankets, emergency food and water supplies as well as other medical items. The initiative was created in response to extreme weather events such as the atmospheric rivers in November 2021, which saw Chilliwack General and Fraser Canyon Hospitals cut off from key supply chain routes.
