Chilliwack – UPDATE – Council approved a full size “replica of the P” using the old Paramount sign as a template. The committee recommended adding a story board to the sign location that would pay homage to the original Paramount sign and theatre and further recommended that the mounting post be painted black to match the decorative lamp post on the opposite side of the breezeway.
ORIGINAL STORY – At the March 5 council meeting, the infamous Paramount sign will be voted on. The staff recommendation is that it would take $80,000 to refurbish the original sign which is in very bad shape since the old theatre was taken down. The sign was taken down in 2013 prior to demolition.
It would only cost $40,000 to create a full-size replica of the Paramount “P” section as well as place a storyboard on site that will pay homage to the Paramount sign and theatre; and further, that the post be painted black in order to match the decorative lamp post on the opposite side of the breezeway.
At the February 16, 2024 Public Art Advisory Committee meeting the committee was presented with the options as noted here in the staff report and although the hope was to pursue Option #1 the committee agreed that Option #2 would be the best direction. The committee recommended adding a story board to the sign location that would pay homage to the original Paramount sign and theatre and further recommended that the mounting post be painted black to match the decorative lamp post on the opposite side of the breezeway.
