OPINION – MP Brad Vis – Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon – “Dream of Home Ownership Out Of Reach”

Ottawa/Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon – Brad Vis, MP Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon and Conservative Shadow Minister for Housing, and Alain Rayes, Conservative Shadow Minister for Canadian Heritage, Official Languages & Quebec Economic Development, issued the following statement calling on Justin Trudeau to stop doubling down on his failed first-time home buyer program and focus on fixing the housing supply issue in Canada:

“As the housing market in Canada continues to reach new and unprecedented highs, the dream of homeownership for far too many Canadians is getting pushed further into the future. Instead of taking action to fix one of the core problems with housing prices in Canada, the Liberals have decided to double down on their failed first-time home buyer program.

“As the average home prices in cities such as Toronto, Brampton, and Vancouver reach over $1 million, the Liberals’ first-time home buyer program has failed to meet promised targets and is clearly not working. It is so flawed that two years into the program, its uptake is less than 10 per cent of what the Trudeau Liberals promised.

“Industry experts say the program has ‘little practical value’ and that the Liberal government is doing nothing to address the ‘unbelievably unaffordable’ housing situation in Canada. That is why Canada’s Conservatives are calling on the Trudeau Liberals to fix the housing supply gap instead of doubling down on their failed program.

“The simple fact is Canadians can’t afford Justin Trudeau’s failure on this issue. Canada’s Conservatives will continue to advance ideas to improve housing affordability and increase supply, while calling out the Trudeau Liberals for their failure to do so.”
