Stolen vehicle recovered on the Fraser River
Hope RCMP received a report of a stolen taxi from a residence on Douglas Street. The vehicle was equipped with a GPS tracking device, allowing the owner to identify its location near the Fraser River. At approximately the same time, police also received a report of an abandoned vehicle in the same area. Officers attended and located the taxi stranded on the Fraser River riverbed. The vehicle had sustained significant front-end and undercarriage damage, three tires were flat, and all doors were found open. While the circumstances surrounding the theft remain under investigation, evidence suggests the suspect may have been attempting to cross the river the old-fashioned way, rather than use a nearby bridge. The taxi owner advised investigators that keys are often left inside the vehicle to facilitate driver shift changes. This incident serves as an important reminder for vehicle owners to remove keys, lock doors, and secure vehicles whenever they are unattended.
Impaired driver from out of province receives driving prohibition
While conducting patrols on Flood Hope Road, an officer observed a pickup truck failing to maintain its lane and proceeding through a stop sign without stopping. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was arrested for impaired operation. The driver, who was from another province, provided a sample into an Approved Screening Device and registered a “Fail.” A second demand was subsequently declined by the driver who was served with an Immediate Roadside Prohibition. The vehicle was also impounded.
Stolen property abandoned in Hope
Hope RCMP received a report of a stolen UTV from Yale, BC at approximately the same time Agassiz RCMP received a report of a stolen flat deck trailer from a construction site. Both the UTV and trailer had been equipped with GPS tracking devices. Investigators quickly identified that both GPS trackers were reporting the same location in Yale. Officers attended the area and spoke with a witness who reported having recently seen a truck towing a trailer whose driver appeared to be lost while looking for a place to turn around. Evidence suggests the GPS tracking devices were removed from the stolen property at that location. The stolen UTV and trailer were later recovered in the Hope area with only minor damage. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the thefts and subsequent abandonment of the property. While it remains unclear why the suspects chose to leave the stolen items behind, the incident highlights the effectiveness of GPS tracking technology in assisting police investigations and improving the likelihood of recovering stolen property.
Compassion chosen over assault charges
Officers responded to a report of an assault at a restaurant on Old Hope Princeton Way. A woman had allegedly assaulted a man who was unknown to her and had done nothing to provoke the incident. Police located the woman sitting inside a locked vehicle in the parking lot. She was advised she was under arrest but refused to exit the vehicle. After partially opening the door, officers were able to safely remove her from the vehicle as they assessed the situation. Throughout the interaction, the woman displayed signs consistent with a mental health crisis. The woman was apprehended by police under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital for assessment and treatment. Rather than seeking charges, the victim, who did not suffer injuries, expressed concern for the woman’s well-being and requested she receive the help and care she needed.
Two incidents involving mental health crises end peacefully
Hope RCMP officers safely resolved two separate incidents involving individuals experiencing apparent mental health crises, with both situations ending without injury and the individuals receiving medical care.
In the first incident, officers responded to reports of a man walking in traffic near Lake of the Woods while behaving erratically. Upon police arrival, the man displayed a machete and challenged officers to engage in a confrontation. As additional officers arrived, the situation de-escalated. The man placed the machete on the ground and was taken into custody without injury to himself, officers, or members of the public. Responding officers observed behaviours suggesting the man was experiencing a mental health crisis. The man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken for a medical assessment and treatment. The incident had the potential to result in serious harm but was thankfully resolved by the actions of the responding officers.
In a separate incident, Hope RCMP responded to a report by a concerned citizen of a woman in the Fraser River near the Rupert Street boat launch. The caller reported the woman appeared distressed and behaving erratically. Officers attended and observed the same behaviours, suggesting the woman was experiencing a mental health crisis. Despite repeated requests by police, the woman refused to leave the water. Officers remained on scene, engaging with her through conversation while monitoring the risks posed by the river current and cold-water temperatures. After an extended period of dialogue, the woman moved close enough to shore for an officer to safely reach out and take hold of her hand. She was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital for assessment and treatment. Officers were able to safely resolve a situation that had the potential for a tragic outcome, ensuring the woman received the support she required.
