Orange Shirt Day — Residential Schools Awareness — Monday September 30

Fraser Valley – On Monday, September 30, you are asked to wear an orange shirt to show your awareness of the legacy of the residential schools.

Why Orange Shirts?

Many people have now heard about the Indian Residential Schools. Few of us have heard the stories of what it was like to attend an Indian Residential School. Phyllis’ story provides us an opportunity learn and talk about what it was like. Those who learn about these schools agree “it’s not something that should be forgotten”.

Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

Aboriginal Education present a Workshop Series, Session 3: Gladys We Never Knew

Join CHC for the third workshop in their Aboriginal Education workshop series, presented by BC Teachers Federation facilitators. They remind everyone wear an orange shirt on September 30, to honour the life of Gladys Chapman and all the children and families affected by the Canadian Residential School system.

Last year, Abbotsford School District marked Orange Shirt day with a march around Mill Lake.

The City of Surrey and the Surrey Urban Indigenous Leadership Committee (SUILC) honoured Orange Shirt Day with a ceremony held at City Hall this past Thursday. Drummers from SFU Surrey and staff from the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development were also in attendance.  The noon hour event honoured the resilience and bravery of Indian residential school survivors and their families.

“Orange Shirt Day is a time to acknowledge and remember the injustices of the past, and it is also a day to come together in a spirit of reconciliation,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “We are dedicated to working with Aboriginal governments, local governments, schools and communities to continue our work in strengthening the Aboriginal community.”

Vancouver Career College in Abbotsford is honouring Orange Shirt Day on September 30, 2019 with a community event and a series of volunteer-led activities including a commemorative walk and drumming, bannock and BBQ lunch, an interactive art exhibit, and hands-on workshops.

Upon completion of the commemorative walk and drumming, special scholarships will be presented to a number of local bands including Aitchelitz, Chawathil, Cheam First Nation, Seabird Island Indian Band, and others.

The campus will also be welcoming local author and member of Sumas First Nation, Beatrice Elaine Silver. As a residential school survivor, Beatrice will be sharing her story, as highlighted in the interactive art exhibit, and offering book signings of her first published book: Lex̲èywaI Pass the Torch to You.
