Add “Fight Cancer” To Your Grocery List – April Is Daffodil Month

Vancouver/Fraser Valley – With April’s Daffodil Month just around the corner, the Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to announce that Your Independent Grocer stores in British Columbia and the Yukon will be selling live flowers in support of the charity’s long-standing fundraising campaign.

Today, until March 30, these provinces’ combined 19 Your Independent Grocer stores will sell fresh cut daffodils for $5.99 and potted daffodils for $8.99. For every bunch of fresh cut or potted daffodils sold, $2 will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

“When you buy Canadian Cancer Society daffodils you will be saving lives and helping people who are living with cancer now and in the future,” says Paula Tylor, annual giving manager, for the Canadian Cancer Society in British Columbia and the Yukon. “2017 marks 60 years since the first daffodils were sold to support the Canadian Cancer Society. Funds raised have helped increase the cancer survival rate from 25% in the 1940s to over 60% today,” she adds.

Money raised during Daffodil Month helps local patients and their families. Donations fund life-saving research, support services and other important work that means fewer Canadians will be touched by the disease.

Last year, thanks to Canadians generous support of Daffodil Month and the Canadian Cancer Society’s other fundraising activities, the charity was able to fund:

·       $44 million in world-class research to fight all cancers

·       $68 million in programs and services for patients and their families that helped almost 163,000 Canadians and 10,183 people in British Columbia and the Yukon

“Loblaw Companies is pleased to partner with Canadian Cancer Society to support Daffodil Month fundraising efforts in British Columbia and the Yukon,” says Leila Fenc, senior director of community investment, Loblaw Companies Limited. “When you buy daffodils, they brighten up your home and bring hope to people living with cancer.”

The Daffodil Month partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and Loblaw started in Ontario in 2014 and expanded to Eastern Canada last year. To date, almost $500,000 has been raised through this collaboration.
