Expansion Proposal For Abbotsford International Airport

Abbotsford – One of the downsides for YXX Abbotsford International Airport, is that it is a victim of its’ own success. The Airport has been well known for the annual Airshow. Over the past years, as a proper international airport and working companion to YVR Vancouver International Airport, it has served Abby and the Fraser Valley will a working alternative. It has become a business tool to become an alternative to Bellingham (to a point).

To no one’s surprise, the Abbotsford Airport Authority is in the process to make a recommendation to City Council for expansion.

General Manager Parm Sidhu has gone on record stating that a formal proposal could be in front of council by the fall.

That would include a $5 million to $6 million project that would increase the capacity of the terminal.

2017 is on target to be YXX’s busiest ever.

The proposed expansion would explore an increase in seating, improving the space between the customs area and terminal building, and basically improve the amount of passengers that flow through every day. That would make possible three to four simultaneous arrivals and departures.

The money for the project would come out of the Airport’s $16M in capital reserves.
