IIO Drops Investigation To Abby Police Response At Fight

Abbotsford (APD Media Release/KAM Productions – Kevin MacDonald/CTV) -May 4 UPDATE -B.C.’s police watchdog, IIO,  is no longer investigating the death of a man in Abbotsford over the weekend.

On Tuesday, the Independent Investigations Office said it’s found no connection between the death and the actions or inaction of police.

Yesterday, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) released jurisdiction of the incident as there was no connection between the actions or inaction of police and the death of the 54-year-old man.

Initial News Release of May 2, 2016:

On Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 8:28 pm, the Abbotsford Police Department was called to a report of a fight at a business in the 32900 block of South Fraser Way. Upon arrival at 8:32 pm, APD Patrol Division officers located an unconscious male on the ground outside the store. They checked for vital signs and began CPR when no pulse was detected. Medical efforts to assist the man were then assumed by Abbotsford Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance personnel upon their arrival.

The 54-year-old man was transported to hospital but, regrettably, he was pronounced dead at 9:16 pm.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) will now be investigating to determine if there is a connection between any police action and the death of the affected person.
