Surrey – On Thursday, TransLink released the results of a year-long technical study on improving late-night transit service, indicating that there could be more buses at night, but no increase to SkyTrain service. SkyTrain hours will not be extended on Fridays and Saturdays, instead a night bus service could be extended and the possibility of an express bus.
The independent study found that “the reality is SkyTrain was not built for 24-hour service” due to high maintenance requirements. It also found the extended hours would come with a $20-million price tag, while potentially slowing down construction on the Broadway and Surrey SkyTrain extensions.
TransLink’s options for a night bus expansion, and a new overnight express bus program that would operate after SkyTrain shuts down for the night, could take some time. TransLink noted it can’t begin planning for the service until funding, estimated at about $4.4 million a year, is secured.
“Surrey is creating a vibrant night culture with arts, restaurants, music and more. Having reliable, safe transit options to enhance Surrey’s livability are needed,” said Anita Huberman, Surrey Board of Trade CEO.
