Hope – From Hope Fire Department: With the cold weather upon us, Hope Fire (and other departments) are reminding people to be extra cautious when using any heaters and never use any open flames as a heating source.
Here are some tips:
Heaters must be approved for use in Canada and for indoor use.
Avoid using extension cords and if you do use an extension cord, ensure that you match the cord to the amount of electricity the heater uses. (Amps)
If you do use an extension cord, avoid tightly wrapping or bundling the extension cord up, as a space heater draws a lot of current and can heat up the extension cord.
Keep a clear space around the heaters, 3-4 feet is recommended.
Avoid using them unattended.
Place the heater on the floor and ensure that it is level.
Inspect the heaters cords for signs of wear and damage
It’s always a good time to check your CO and Smoke Alarm(s)
