Don’t Be Stupid This Long Weekend – The Fines Aren’t Worth It

Chilliwack/Abbotsford (With files from News1130) – The Victoria Day Long Weekend is always seen as the official start of summer. The weather should cooperate.

Not to be preachy (everyone should have a rip snorting good time in the great outdoors, or at least the great back yards) but remember, doing dumb things are not worth the fines.

Forests are tinder dry so keep an eye on campfires and don’t toss cigarette butts out into the brush.

Park rangers, conservation officers and the RCMP are teaming together to make sure people aren’t breaking the rules on both land and water.

If you’re caught without a valid angling or operator’s license, you could be taken off the water and slapped with a costly fine.

The big fines come hit while you’re camping.  Expect six figure fines if you start a wildfire ($100,000 is not out of the question).

You can’t drink in parks and you need to clean up after you’re done barbecuing to deter bear activity.

And the basic reminder on your to do or NOT do list:

– Provincial park gates close at 11 p.m., unless you’re a registered camper
– Excessive noise is forbidden
– Designated swim areas are there for your protection
– Campfires can’t be more than half-metre high and you should keep a one metre distance from the fire.

There is no fine for forgetting ingredients for hot hogs or ‘smores, but that is considered poor holiday form.
