Richmond (Dan Kinvig) – Women’s Golf: Cascades 10th at True North Classic
The University of the Fraser Valley women’s golf team finished 10th overall at the True North Classic, hosted this week at Richmond Country Club by the Simon Fraser University Clan.
The Cascades were led by rookie Sarah Lawrence, who carded rounds of 77 on Monday and 85 on Tuesday to finish at +18, good for a share of 25th place. The highlight of her tourney was an eagle on the par-four 13th on Monday – Lawrence’s approach shot from 170 yards found the bottom of the cup.
UFV’s Emery Bardock (82-83, +20) was solo 30th, Natasha Kozlowski (82-84, +21) was T-31st, and Sharon Park (89-85, +30) was 50th.
“We were thrilled to be part of the first NCAA golf event in Canada – that was definitely a huge honour,” Cascades assistant coach Jennifer Greggain said. “I don’t think the team played as well as we would have hoped, but we learned from the experience and we’re looking forward to our next opportunity to tee it up.”
Team-wise, the host Clan ran away with the title. Their combined score of +19 was 25 strokes clear of runner-up Western Washington (+44), and three Clan golfers – led by individual winner Jaya Rampuri – were in the top five. UFV finished at +91 as a team.
“There was definitely some great play in this tournament, and SFU played amazingly well,” Greggain noted. “It was a great opportunity for our girls to get some NCAA experience.”
UP NEXT: The Cascades men’s and women’s golf teams are in action next week, participating in the UBC Thunderbird Invitational at Sudden Valley Golf Course in Bellingham, Wash., Sept. 23-24.
