Chilliwack (City of Chilliwack) – Work will begin in October. Initial work will include new water, sanitary and storm main systems being removed and replaced along Yale Road and Main Street from Alexander Avenue to Wellington Avenue.
The project will continue into next year when Main Street from Yale Road to Kipp Avenue will be reconstructed. Work will include a stamped concrete boulevard, street trees and new ornamental lights. The traffic signal at Spadina Avenue and Main Street will be rebuilt and the curb bulges at intersections will be enlarged at intersections to increase pedestrian safety.
Timeline
Construction will begin in October with the bulk of the concrete and asphalt work slated for next spring. Completion is expected summer 2027.
Project Details
Intersection Improvements
The traffic signal at the intersection of Spadina Avenue and Main Street will be completely replaced to bring it into compliance with current electrical and traffic standards and to allow capacity future upgrades.
Curb bulges at intersections will improve pedestrian visibility and safety and will increase signal efficiency. Greenscape will be incorporated in these bulges for appeal and to facilitate drainage. New street trees will be planted within the boulevards and will be selected from the City’s approved tree species list located in the Tree Management Bylaw.
Road Improvements
The road will be paved and new thermoplastic line markings will be installed enhancing rideability and marking visibility. The downtown ornamental black street lights will be installed along Main Street to facilitate current lighting standards.
Parking will remain on both sides of the road between the intersection bulges.
Underground Infrastructure Upgrades
A new water main will be installed from Alexander Avenue to Wellington Avenue. This water line will be designed to facilitate current and future needs for the area.
Sanitary and storm sewer lines, manholes and catch basins will be upgraded to new PVC pipes, sturdy precast manholes and catch basins and adjusted grading to better service properties and future demand. The new storm infrastructure will be from Cheam Avenue to Wellington Avenue, and the sanitary infrastructure will be Yale Road and Princess Avenue.
Traffic Impacts
The public can expect to see different traffic configurations during different stages of the project, including single lane alternating traffic, one-way closures, short-term road closures, and reduced and pushed lane traffic configurations. Detours are expected and people travelling through the area should plan their commute accordingly. The City will provide current information on the traffic notifications page.
