Chilliwack – Sunday morning (Just after 8:30 a.m. on November 9) Chilliwack Fire Department was dispatched to reports of light smoke coming from a boarded-up home in the 9000 block of Garden Drive. Crews from Halls 1 and 4 responded to the call.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed light smoke showing from the structure with a posted no-
occupancy. Crews made entry, established a water supply, and initiated a quick-fire attack. Their
swift action minimized structural damage and prevented further destruction to the home.
Fortunately, a bystander noticed the smoke in its early stages and immediately called 9-1-1,
allowing for a rapid response.
There were no injuries to the public; however, one firefighter sustained minor injury and was
transported to hospital for medical assessment; they have since been released and are expected
to make a complete recovery.
Initial reports suggest that someone had gained unauthorized entry to the property prior to the
fire. The incident appears to be accidental in nature, though the cause remains under
investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department.
The Chilliwack Fire Department reminds the public that entering vacant or boarded-up
properties is both dangerous and illegal. These structures can be unstable and may contain
significant hazards such as debris, weakened floors, or hidden fire damage. Unauthorized entry
also puts firefighters and first responders at greater risk when responding to emergencies.
