Chilliwack – Around supper time on Wednesday October 22, the Chilliwack Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 6000 block of Glenmore Drive. Crews from Halls 1 and 4 responded to the call. Smoke was visible as crews arrived on scene, coming from the upper floor of a single-family residential home. Firefighters quickly made entry and conducted an aggressive interior attack while exterior crews established a water supply.
The aggressive knockdown of the fire significantly reduced and prevented further spread throughout the home.
There were no injuries reported to either the public or responding firefighters.
All residents and the family pet were able to safely evacuate the home thanks to working smoke alarms that alerted the young occupants to the danger.
“The young occupants did exactly what we hope every resident would do,” said Assistant Chief
of Prevention and Investigations Krista Minar. “The didn’t hesitate – when the alarms sounded
and they confirmed that there was a problem, they grabbed the family pet and evacuated
immediately. Because of that quick action and calm response, everyone got out safely.”
The department also acknowledges the efforts of a neighbor who attempted to control the fire with a fire extinguisher prior to the arrival of crews.
There was sustained significant smoke damage to upper floor, and occupants were unable to return home.
Initial reports indicate the fire was accidental in nature.
