Island 22 – Just after 3PM on Monday December 15, Chilliwack RCMP received a report of a female who had been struck by a tree limb, on a trail near the dog park at Island 22. The female was walking with her two young children when this occurred. The weather at the time was severe and unpredictable, marked by high winds and heavy rain.
Two other people who were in the area at the time called 911 and rendered care to the female. Chilliwack Fire Department and Emergency Health Services attended and provided life‑saving measures. Unfortunately, the 27‑year‑old Chilliwack woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The BC Coroners Service attended and continues its investigation. At this time, there is no indication of this being anything other than a tragic and unforeseen event.
Next of kin notifications have been completed. The children were not physically harmed and are with family. Out of respect for the privacy of the family, the Chilliwack RCMP will not be releasing the name of the deceased.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family. That link is here.
The Chilliwack RCMP would like to thank the members of the public who acted quickly to help the female, and care for the children, during this difficult incident.
In a Statement from Mayor Ken Popove: “The news about the tragic accident at Island 22 Regional Park is absolutely devastating, and our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends.”
