Fraser Valley – MSOC: Szymanski, Brazinha, De Souza, and Mailand earn conference All-Star recognition
The UFV Cascades men’s soccer team capped off a fantastic regular season with a historic showing in the Canada West All-Star and All-Rookie selections.
The Cascades earned three First-Team All-Star selections, one Second-team All-Star selection, and one All-Rookie Team selection. That marks the most All-Star recognition by any UFV program in a single Canada West season.
First-Team selections included reigning CW Player of the Year Mateo Brazinha, who led the conference with 13 goals in 13 matches. The dynamic forward was joined by stalwart defender Adam Szymanski and rookie goalkeeper Matheus De Souza, who earned the rare distinction of being named to both the All-Star and All-Rookie teams after setting a new program single-season shutout record earlier this year.
MSOC: Déjà-two – Cascades defeat Calgary in conference quarterfinal for second straight season
In a similar script to the previous season’s postseason, it took 120 minutes of play, but the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades booked their berth into Sunday’s Canada West men’s soccer semi-final with a 2-0 victory over the Calgary Dinos at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium Friday evening.
The two teams met in last year’s Canada West quarterfinal, with the Cascades prevailing in a penalty shootout on that occasion.
Defender Adam Szymanski was the UFV hero, finally breaking the deadlock with his first career Canada West goal in a tense affair in the final minutes of the first half of extra time. Szymanski was equally superb on the defensive side, preventing a Calgary equalizer with a last ditch tackle in the box, before Grischa Heider secured the victory with a first career Canada West goal of his own in the 120th minute.
MBB: O’Connor scores 23 in UFV debut as Cascades fall in season opener to UBC
Playing in his first regular season game for the UFV Cascades, transfer Bennett O’Connor led all scorers with 23 points, but UFV dropped their season opener on the road to the UBC Thunderbirds 85-67 to begin the Canada West season.
While they led from start to finish, the Thunderbirds were never allowed to be fully comfortable as the Cascades continuously made pushes to get themselves right back into things.
The Thunderbirds led 36-12 in bench scoring. First-year guard Raj Dhadda poured in 14 points on 5-7 shooting, 4-6 from the outside, while Nylan Roberts nearly double-doubled off the bench with nine points and 10 rebounds.
When it comes to the starters, Nikola Guzina scored a team-high 19 points to go with seven boards, while Tobi Akinkunmi had 15 points and three assists while playing just 17 minutes due to foul trouble.
For the Cascades, O’Connor led the way with 23 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Ismael Hernandez tallied 14 points and seven boards in support.
WBB: Cascades season opens with loss at UBC
The UFV Cascades kicked off the 2025-26 Canada West regular season with a 71-47 defeat to the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday evening at War Memorial Gym. The veteran UBC squad caused turnovers all night and were able to get their first win under new head coach Dave Taylor.
Olivia Weekes led the way for the T-Birds with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Jade Huynh hit four, three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Rookie Brooke Wagner chipped in with 9 points and 7 rebounds.
UFV’s Julia Tuchscherer led all scorers with a game-high 26 points on an efficient 11 of 17 shooting and added four rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Fania Taylor chipped in with nine points and five rebounds for the visitors.
MVB: Cascades fall in three to defending conference champs
The defending Canada West champion Winnipeg Wesmen opened their title defence with a victory over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, going 3-0 (25-15, 31-29, 25-21) in their season-opener Friday night at the UFV Athletics Centre.
Luke Lodewyks made no errors and finished with seven kills on 14 swings, and Jaxon Rose had a match-high 10 kills and five digs as the Wesmen won their season-opener for the ninth straight season.
The Wesmen have won each of their season-openers since 2016 and in Friday’s debut they got hot early, fought off a pesky Cascades squad in the middle set and largely controlled the decisive third.
