BCHL Ahead On Concussion Protocol

Vancouver  – The British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and HeadCheck Health, Inc. (HeadCheck) have entered into the second year of a partnership to improve player safety using innovative concussion management software. The successful first year of the partnership helped pave the way for a new national CJHL Concussion Program supported by The Co-operators.

The partnership saw all 17 BCHL teams implement HeadCheck’s software last season allowing the league to further standardize concussion management protocols and monitor adherence to their policy. BCHL team trainers and athletic therapists used HeadCheck’s mobile app to document suspected concussions and perform the concussion assessments required by the league’s policy. By having the entire league using the same system, a player’s concussion history was able to move with them from team-to-team leading to a better standard of care.

For the upcoming season, HeadCheck’s partnerships with the CJHL and BC Hockey will see more new players entering the league with their concussion history available to their new teams through the system.

“HeadCheck allowed our teams to conduct more efficient sideline testing and helped raise the level of care provided to our players,” said Trevor Alto, Executive Director of the BCHL.  “The nationwide adoption of the software by the CJHL will facilitate communication between leagues when players are transferred.”

“We were very pleased with the way the entire BCHL prioritized concussion safety and made every effort to improve the league’s concussion management procedures last season,” said Harrison Brown, Co-Founder and CEO of HeadCheck. “The partnership also allowed us to make significant upgrades to the concussion management software and services we provide based off their feedback.”

In addition to the software, the league was supplied with monthly reporting from HeadCheck that allowed them to identify any gaps in their concussion policy. Team trainers received 24/7 customer support and regular info sessions were held to ensure everyone in the league was using the software to its fullest potential. Partner clinics gained access to HeadCheck to help facilitate better treatment and a return-to-play and medical clearance process.
