Paramount Project Senior Housing – Zoning Approved (VIDEO)

Chilliwack -SEPTEMBER 5 UPDATE- Chilliwack City Council approved the zoning application for the Paramount Seniors Housing Project with no major hurdles in its path.  Diane Janzen the Executive Director of Chilliwack Community Services (and a former City Councilor) stated her case with no major opposition. The Chilliwack BIA sent a letter of glowing recommendation that this be approved.

The next step is the September 17 deadline to file for funding from BC Housing.

Jason Laynes with Chilliwack Community Services, tweeted to FVN that now the waiting game continues with BC Housing:

ORIGINAL STORY  AUGUST 13 – Monday evening at the Chilliwack Five Corners office of CCS Chilliwack Community Services, the great unveiling of a  (55+) seniors housing project drew rave reviews and a few jaws hitting the floor.

The Paramount Project is a CCS project to build a mixed-use building that will consist of 44 housing units for seniors with rents affordable in the range of low and moderate income levels, and 20,000 sq. ft of office space. This brand-new state of the art building will be located in downtown Chilliwack at the old Paramount location, 46183 & 46187 Yale Road.

The project can be found on their website.

Should the project get the funding and zoning, a piece of Chilliwack history could come out of storage. The OLD Paramount Theatre sign, long been in storage since the old theatre was demolished in 2013, would be part of the facade.

The funding would come from the Province and BC Housing. The City of Chilliwack and CEPCO – Chilliwack Economic Partners Corp have already signed on for funding.

CCS will be in front of a public hearing Monday August 21 for a zoning hearing to rezone from town centre commercial zone to mixed use development.

The revitalization into a seniors (55+) social housing project would look something like this.

The first thing you will notice are the big office and apartment windows facing south with lots of natural light.

Paul Donaldson Chair of the CCS Board was asked by FVN at the public consultation to describe the project and some of the challenges including saftey in the neighborhood.

City Councillor and Mayoral Candidate Ken Popove on the proposal, the convenience for the tenants, and bringing back a vibrant downtown core. Popove was also asked about the safety issue.
