Abbotsford Police – Birch Street Shooting Now Homicide Investigation (VIDEO)

Abbotsford – JULY 3 UPDATE – On July 1, 2018, Abbotsford Emergency Services responded to a report of a shooting on Birch Street.  A 20 year old male suffering from a gunshot wound was transported to hospital.  The victim has since died from his injuries.

The investigation is now being transitioned to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). Anyone with information about this incident should call the IHIT Tip Line at 1-877-551-4448 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

IHIT released this statement:

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken conduct of an investigation that began as a shooting incident and is now a homicide after the victim died in hospital yesterday.

On July 1, 2018 at 6:14 p.m. the Abbotsford Police received a call of a shooting at a home in the 2500-block of Birch Street.  When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound who was taken to hospital.  The victim later died of his injuries in hospital and IHIT assumed conduct of the investigation.

IHIT is working closely with its partners from the Abbotsford Police Department, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services and the B.C. Coroners Service to gather evidence.

One man was arrested in connection with the shooting and has since been released from police custody.  No criminal charges have been laid, as of yet, with respect to this investigation.

IHIT investigators have identified the victim but his name is not being released as it will not further the investigation at this time.  The victim’s family has been notified of his death. 

“We believe this was an isolated incident, with no known links to drugs and gang activity, involving individuals that were known to each other,” says Corporal Frank Jang of IHIT.

ORIGINAL STORY – JULY 1 – On Canada Day/Sunday Night July 1 (6:14PM) Abbotsford Police received a 911 hang up phone call alerting them to a possible shooting at a residence in the 2500 block of Birch Street.  The BC Ambulance Service arrived at the residence and located a male, in his early 20’s, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The male was transported by BC Ambulance Service to hospital where he remains in critical condition. 

An 18 year old male has been arrested and remains in police custody.

Currently, Major Crime Detectives, Forensic Identification Section and Patrol Officers are investigating.
