British Columbia’s 30th Lieutenant Governor – Janet Austin Is Sworn In

Ottawa/Victoria -APRIL 24 UPDATE – Provincial Statement – Premier John Horgan offered his congratulations Tuesday to Janet Austin, OBC, on being sworn in as British Columbia’s 30th lieutenant governor.

“It’s a privilege to welcome Janet Austin as the new Lieutenant Governor to British Columbia,” said Premier Horgan. “She brings an extraordinary list of accomplishments and tireless advocacy for people in British Columbia to this appointment. We are truly fortunate to have such an accomplished and engaged leader to fulfil this important role.”

At an installation ceremony at the Parliament Bulidings, Austin took the Oath of Allegiance and Oaths of Office, administered by Chief Justice Robert J. Bauman, before members of the legislative assembly, dignitaries, family and friends.

One of her first duties as the new Lieutenant Governor was to inspect a 100-person guard of honour at the front of the Parliament Buildings. She received a 15-gun salute fired by a troop of the 5th (British Columbia) Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery and the Naden Band of Maritime Forces Pacific played the Vice Regal Salute in tribute to her appointment.

The lieutenant governor is appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister and serves a term of at least five years. Austin succeeds Judith Guichon as the Queen’s representative in B.C.

MARCH 20 ORIGINAL STORY – The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced on Tuesday, the appointment of Janet Austin as the next Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.

Ms. Austin is a remarkable community leader and advocate for social change. She currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA Metro Vancouver, a position she has held since 2003. Prior to joining the YWCA, she was the Executive Director of Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland and worked for BC Housing.

Ms. Austin is an active member of various local and national organizations, including the Board of Directors of Translink and the City of Vancouver’s Healthy City for All Leadership Table. During her career, she has served on numerous boards, including the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade and the Canadian Paediatric Society.

The Prime Minister thanked the outgoing Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Judith Guichon, for her numerous contributions and her work to engage communities, non-profit organizations, and businesses across the province since taking office in 2012.

Janet Austin is a leader in her community and an advocate for social change in British Columbia. She currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA Metro Vancouver, a position she has held since 2003. In this capacity, she is responsible for one of British Columbia’s largest and most diversified non-profit organizations.

Prior to joining the YWCA, she was the Executive Director of Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland and worked for BC Housing.

Ms. Austin is an active member of various local and national organizations, including the Board of Directors of Translink and the City of Vancouver’s Healthy City for All Leadership Table. Ms. Austin’s work and leadership in the community have been recognized by her peers on numerous occasions. She has received several awards, including the Business in Vancouver Influential Women in Business Award, the Vancouver Board of Trade Community Leadership Award and the Wendy McDonald Diversity Champion Award. She is also the recipient of the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals and is a Member of the Order of British Columbia.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Calgary and an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, British Columbia.

Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement on the appointment of a lieutenant-governor-designate for British Columbia:

“I join British Columbians in welcoming Janet Austin as the next lieutenant-governor and Queen’s representative in British Columbia.

“Ms. Austin is a business leader and change-maker who has dedicated her career to helping people and building community. She will ably represent our province as B.C.’s next lieutenant-governor.

“At this time, I would like to recognize Her Honour Judith Guichon for her years of service. She has performed her duties admirably, and British Columbians everywhere offer her their thanks and best wishes for the future.”
