UFV’s Sartori Canada West First Star Of The Week

Abbotsford – Kayli Sartori of the University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team has been named the Canada West female first star of the week after leading her squad to a pair of crucial road wins over the UBC Okanagan Heat.

Sartori, a fourth-year guard/forward out of Abbotsford’s W.J. Mouat Secondary, had double-doubles both nights as the Cascades prevailed 65-50 on Friday and 90-44 on Saturday.

Both games in Kelowna were essentially must-win for the Cascades to maintain realistic playoff hopes, and Sartori sparked her team in Friday’s opener with 15 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and one steal.

She was even better in Saturday’s rematch, coming within one rebound of earning just the fourth triple-double in Canada West women’s basketball history. Sartori’s stat line included 19 points, 10 assists, nine boards and one steal.

The Canada West female second and third stars, respectively, were Alberta’s Jessilyn Fairbanks (basketball) and UBCO’s Megan Festival (volleyball).

It’s Sartori’s second conference star of the week award this season – she was the third star for the week ending Nov. 15. She’s currently leading Canada West in scoring at 18.8 points per game, part of an outstanding all-around season which also has her among the top 10 in rebounds (7.8 per game, ninth), assists (4.3, fourth), blocks (1.6, fourth) and steals (2.3, eighth).

The weekend results pushed the Cascades (9-7) to within a game of UBCO (10-6) for the Explorer Division’s third and final playoff spot with four regular-season games remaining.

UFV’s basketball teams are at home this weekend, hosting the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday (women 5 p.m., men 7 p.m.) at the Envision Athletic Centre.

Friday is the Cascades women’s basketball team’s annual Shoot for the Cure game, and also coincides with the athletic department’s UFV Alumni Night promotion. Saturday is Senior Night for the UFV basketball programs – fifth-year players Shayna Cameron and Kevon Parchment will be honoured in pregame ceremonies.
