Chilliwack Council Approves First Reading and November 3 Public Hearing On Future Of Old Safeway Building

Chilliwack, BC – To no one’s surprise, Chilliwack City Council unanimously approved First Reading and the movement to a November 3 public hearing to re-zone the old Safeway building on Main Street.

From the City’s Agenda for October 20, 2015: The market assessment undertaken for the 2008 Downtown Strategic Neighbourhoods Plan predicted redevelopment of the former Safeway site for high-rise residential and retail development as a catalyst for redevelopment in the core, in advance of development in the Five Corners and adjacent Yale Road East area. Accordingly, the Downtown Land Use Plan designated the eastern portion of the site fronting Main Street “Urban Quarter” for high rise apartment over retail development, and the western portion of the site for “Residential 4” high rise apartment development.
The buildings located at the former Safeway site have not been occupied for several years and the City’s Bylaw Enforcement Department has received numerous complaints from the community regarding unsecure and unsightly premises, graffiti, and other general nuisances. Following repeated attempts to work with SDLP Snowcat Ltd. (Sobeys Inc.), the property owner, Sobeys Inc. has now undertaken action to fence the perimeter of the buildings and start the process for demolition and to clean the property.
While the recent efforts of the property owner will assist in remediating the former Safeway site, rezoning of the property is also proposed to ensure that future development supports downtown planning and revitalization efforts.
