2016 Christmas In July – Salvation Army

Chilliwack – This is the headline from FVN, July 18, 2015.

Last Year.

For children living in low-income families , summer can be the hungriest time of the year. Those who normally benefit from school feeding programs now have to find food in the home.

HUNGER HURTS. The Christmas Kettles will be out all over the city  in July. Please help your local Food Bank.

Nothing has changed, in fact, it’s worse.

July 22 and 23 – 2016, the Chilliwack Salvation Army Christmas Kettles it the streets for Christmas in July. A needed push for the Food Bank. It’s sad that this has to happen in this day and age, but the need continues to grow.

Don Armstrong with the Salvation Army notes that their goal is $10,000 – last year they raised $9000.

While the food bank always needs dry goods, they can stretch the dollar to accommodate those in need.

For every $1 donated, they can buy $3 worth of goods.

That number continues to grow.

Armstrong says they are witnessing a 25 percent increase in families coming through the doors.

Think about that number for a second. It boggles the mind.

In the summer, Chilliwack Bowls of Hope can not feed school kids. School is not in session, therefore, the Food Bank takes the brunt of the requests.

If you can take the time for a two hour volunteer position to man a kettle, email careandshareda@shaw.ca.

Food and financial donations can always be made to the Chilliwack Care and Share – 45746 Yale Road, across from Bonzzini’s Restaurant.
