Abbotsfoird/Richmond – The ALS Society of British Columbia received a cheque from the proceeds of the 2023 Abbotsford Police – John Goyer Memorial Charity Golf Tournament presented by Flaman Fitness – Abbotsford in the amount of $21,241.00. The funds will go to support patient service programs provided by the Society. The tournament was held in July 2023 to honour the memory of Constable John Goyer. Since 2006, the Abbotsford Police have hosted the golf tournament to keep John’s memory alive and to support others affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). To date $216,276 has been raised.
John Goyer joined the Abbottsford Police on April 9, 1998, and immediately earned the respect of his colleagues. On September 26, 2001, while on duty, John was involved in a violent altercation while he was attempting to arrest a subject in a domestic assault. The injuries that he sustained during the melee where later determined to be the trigger that resulted in the onset of ALS. On April 19, 2006, less than 5 years later, John made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his community. His passing was the first “in the line of duty” death in the history of the Abbotsford Police Department.
