Mission (Sophia Northesat BCIT Radio Arts and Journalism) – National Lifejacket Day is Thursday, May 19 and the city of Mission has you covered.
Missions Parks, Recreation, and Culture is putting on an event at the Mission Leisure Centre for you to bring down your lifejackets and Personal Floatation Devices (PFD) for a free inspection by one of their certified lifeguards. This event is all day starting from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The goal of this event is to ensure your family stays safe while enjoying the many lakes British Columbia has to offer.
Along with bringing down your PFD your name will be entered into a draw to win a free PFD.
According to Transport Canada August 2019 you are required by law to have a lifejacket or PFD on board for each person on a watercraft.
When choosing your lifejacket or PFD many factors are to be considered.
Visibility, the bright colours like yellow and orange are easier to see from the water for emergency services or other boaters.
Fit, consider a more snug fit this is ideal when considering your lifejacket or PFD to ensure you stay above water.
Organizations approval, Canada has 3 organizations to look for when selecting a life jacket or PFD. Transport Canada, Canadian Coast Guard, and the Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
