Abbotsford/Vancouver – Colon cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed forms of cancer, affecting 1 in 6 people in British Columbia with around 3000 people receiving a diagnosis each year. Of those, 94 per cent of men and women diagnosed are aged 50 years and older.
March marks Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and for those looking for more information on colorectal cancer, BC Cancer is holding a Colorectal Cancer Education Day on March 23.
The event will cover an overview of colorectal cancer along with treatments for colorectal cancer, nutrition information, and a question booth.

It is recommended that men and women age 50 to 74 be screened regularly for colon cancer. Screening can prevent colon cancer by finding and removing small growths, known as polyps, before they turn into cancer. Screening can also lead to early detection which leads to more treatment options and better outcomes.
Screening is only recommended for people who are not experiencing symptoms of colon cancer. Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms including: bloody stool, abdominal pain, change in bowel habits, or weight loss.
