Abby/Mission Shut Out Of Provincial Housing Money

Fraser Valley – While Chilliwack recently received funding for two social housing projects, Abbotsford and Mission have been shut out of the money, and no one really has an answer.

Now remember, there are still a few remaining months left until end of the Provincial fiscal year (March 31, 2017) followed by the May provincial election.

So anything can happen in the time period.

BC Disability Caucus took to Facebook to announce their howl of protest “Details of the $516 million investment into rental housing were revealed Tuesday, but of the 68 projects in 38 different communities around B.C., none are in the central Fraser Valley.”

Back in July, Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun as well as the Provincial Finance Minister/Abbotsford West MLA  Mike De Jong were both hopeful that cash would be on the way.

Abbotsford is seeing a small increase in private rental construction, but it really is a drop in the bucket and as a private venture, rents are not expected to be affordable.

Chilliwack recently received Provincial cash for a first nations social housing project and another under the banner of Ruth and Naomi’s Mission ( for a total of 115 units with all having a 2018 opening date).
