Over the past several weeks, I know many of you have had questions about my decision to leave the Conservative Party of BC and, now, my decision to return. You deserve an explanation directly from me.
I did not leave the Conservative caucus lightly.
I left because I could no longer have confidence in the leadership of Kerry-Lynne Findlay or in the direction the party was taking under her leadership. I have always believed that those entrusted with public office must lead with honesty, integrity and accountability. When I felt those principles were no longer being upheld, I could not simply remain silent and carry on as though nothing was wrong.
Walking away was difficult, but I believed it was necessary. My decision was never about abandoning my conservative values, and it certainly was never about abandoning the people of Abbotsford South. I made the decision I believed was right at the time, based on the circumstances in front of me.
Those circumstances have now changed.
Kerry-Lynne Findlay has stepped down as leader, and with a provincial election now underway, I have accepted the invitation to return to the Conservative Party of BC.
I return with great confidence in Lorne Doerksen.
Lorne is someone I know not only as a colleague, but as a friend. He is honest, hardworking and deeply committed to the people he serves. He has earned my respect over the years, both as a public servant and as a person, and I am proud to stand alongside him and my Conservative colleagues once again.
I also believe British Columbia needs a change in direction. After years of NDP government, we need to bring fiscal responsibility, practical decision-making and common-sense politics back to this province. British Columbians deserve a government that respects their hard-earned tax dollars, supports the people and industries that drive our economy, and focuses on delivering results.
The NDP will be making its case for another term, and our Conservative team will be making the case for change. I believe Lorne and this united Conservative team can offer British Columbians that alternative.
Through every decision I have made, one thing has remained constant: my commitment to Abbotsford South.
