Agassiz/Rosedale – People travelling across the Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge will see major upgrades begin this fall, helping ensure the bridge remains safe, reliable and in service for communities and travellers in the Fraser Valley for decades to come.
The Province has awarded a $33-million major works contract to B.C.-based Graham Infrastructure LP for the rehabilitation of the bridge. Construction is expected to begin in September 2026 and take approximately three years to complete.
The Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge carries nearly 15,000 vehicles each day across the Fraser River between Agassiz and Rosedale/Bridal Falls. The bridge, which opened in 1956, carries two lanes of Highway 9 between Highway 1 and Highway 7 and serves communities on both sides of the Fraser River.
Extending the life of the bridge
The project will address deterioration of the bridge’s structural steel and concrete, improve drainage and extend the operational service life of the bridge by an estimated 50 years.
Key work will include:
- replacing deck expansion joints
- rehabilitating structural components
- removing corrosion and repairing affected areas
- improving drainage systems
- recoating the bridge structure
- other upgrades to help protect the bridge and extend its service life
The Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge is an important connection for people, goods and communities in the Fraser Valley. These upgrades will help maintain this vital connection and support safer, more reliable travel for decades to come.
Keeping people moving during construction
Most of the work will take place underneath the bridge. However, some work on the bridge deck will require single-lane-alternating traffic.
To minimize impacts on drivers, these traffic-pattern changes will generally be scheduled during months when traffic volumes are lower. The length of lane closures will also be managed based on traffic conditions. During single-lane-alternating traffic, maximum delays are expected to be approximately 15 minutes.
There will be short periods when no traffic will be able to cross the bridge due to safety while construction is underway. Advance notification will be provided on the DriveBC website to help drivers plan their trips. Emergency service vehicles will be accommodated through the closure periods.
Drivers are encouraged to regularly check DriveBC for the most up-to-date information about traffic impacts, delays, closures and travel conditions before travelling through the area.
Traffic impacts
Starting as early as Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, and during the course of the project, the rehab work is expected to require nightly lane closures so the contractor can safely work.
Occasional full closures of the bridge will occur overnight only between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. for as much as 15 minutes at a time. For the duration of these closures, traffic will be required to wait on either end of the bridge. Stoppages can be avoided by planning to detour over the Mission Bridge.
Single-lane-alternating traffic is expected to be in place overnight between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. (extended to 8 a.m. on weekends).
During the winter months, single-lane-alternating traffic may be in place full-time (24/7) as needed to allow the contractor to advance work on the project.
