Thanks to the quick thinking of an employee at a retirement residence in Mission, a senior was saved from losing $20,000 to a scammer. Mission RCMP were called by the staff member on the morning of November 14, after an 82-year-old resident of the home left with an 84-year-old male friend to deposit a $20,000 cheque into a Bitcoin ATM in Surrey. The woman had already previously lost another large sum of money, but reportedly did not believe that she was being scammed. Her male friend had also reportedly lost a large sum of money to scams over the past couple of years. One of the scammers had convinced the male that he could help get the female’s money back, if she deposited the $20,000. An officer from Mission RCMP reached the male by phone, and was able to convince him to pull over and meet with police before leaving Mission. The officer spoke with both the male and female, as well as a family member of the female, and became concerned for the woman’s ability to make sound decisions for herself. She was transported to hospital for assessment and care, and the officer helped her friend to understand the red flags around the transaction that he had been trying to help facilitate. This is a good reminder to reach out to the elderly persons in your life to make them aware of these types of scams, especially ones where a victim gets a follow-up phone call or email from someone claiming to be able to get their money back for a fee. If you believe that someone has been scammed or is in the process of being scammed, call police immediately. Red flags include someone making unusual new investments, making large cash withdrawals, mentioning communicating with a new person online or by phone, or buying large amounts of gift cards. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre maintains a list of the more common scams to be aware of: https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/…/individua…

After three pickup trucks were stolen from a business in Chilliwack on November 11, one of the trucks – a red 2001 Ford F-350 – was spotted in Hatzic on the afternoon of November 12. The truck stopped at a gas station and attracted attention due to the fact that teenaged girls from the truck began approaching people to ask for gas money, while the male driver of the truck refused to speak to anyone. A concerned citizen reported the matter to police and provided the license plate number, which helped to confirm that it was one of the stolen trucks. Police attended, but the truck had already left the area. A few days later, on November 15, a Mission RCMP officer was dealing with an unrelated matter on Cherry Avenue, when the same F-350 drove past him, and immediately sped off upon seeing the police car. The officer located the truck dumped nearby, with two occupants fleeing from it. Both occupants were arrested, while a third remains outstanding. The truck was seized for a forensic exam, and the investigation is ongoing. The two other pickups stolen from Chilliwack have also since been recovered.

Shortly before 3 am on November 11, a male entered an open garage door on Cleven Drive, then entered the house from the garage. The male stole keys to the homeowner’s white Ford Escape, stole tools from the garage, then left and returned a short time later to take the Escape. No one was injured, and the investigation is ongoing. The Escape was recovered in Mission later the same day. Anyone with information is asked to call Mission RCMP, file 25-14357. Residents are encouraged to ensure that both outer and inner garage doors are locked at night, or whenever you are away from your home.

Around 12:45 am on November 12, two males with face coverings forced entry into a house on Brant Avenue, where one man was asleep inside. The resident confronted one of the offenders, who in turn bear-sprayed the resident, then fled. Nothing was taken from the house, and the resident’s only injury was the irritation from the bear spray. It is unknown why the offenders targeted that specific house. The investigation is ongoing, and has not been linked to the November 11 incident where an offender entered an open garage on Cleven Drive. Anyone with more information about this incident should call Mission RCMP, file 25-14406.

On the lighter side:

There are some weeks when one particular police incident stands out as being especially strange or somewhat humorous, while there are other weeks when multiple police calls fit the bill. Some of the more peculiar files this past week include: a white car that was seen driving into oncoming traffic along 14th Avenue while the driver was busy doing her makeup rather than paying attention to the road; a teenager who was suspiciously walking up to parked vehicles on 7th Avenue while putting on oven mitts; and a woman that had to be escorted out of a large retail store after an employee caught her putting new barcodes on high-value items, with the hopes of getting a deep-discount when going through the cash register (hint: staff will take notice when you are trying to buy a tv but it’s ringing up as a pair of purple pajama pants…and yes, they even monitor purchases being made at the self-checkouts!).
