City of Chilliwack with WildSafeBC Fraser Valley – From their joint social media post on November 7: Due to recent bear activity in the community, we’re reminding everyone to stay alert and do their part to keep bears wild and people safe. As bears prepare for winter, they’re searching for food and human attractants like garbage, fruit, compost, and pet food.
Here’s how you can help:
• Secure all attractants: store garbage, compostable waste, and recycling in a secure area until collection day.
• Manage fruit trees: pick ripe fruit promptly and remove any fallen fruit from the ground.
• Clean outdoor areas: keep barbecues clean and pet food indoors.
• Bird feeders: only use bird feeders during the winter season, between October to March, and ensure they are inaccessible to other wildlife and domestic cats.
• Never hand-feed or approach wildlife: feeding wildlife teaches them to associate people with food, putting both you and the animal at risk.
• Report sightings: if you see a potential wildlife conflict, contact the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP).
Let’s work together to reduce human–bear conflicts and keep our community safe.
