Tsawwassen (Canadian Press) – Two people have been killed in a crash at the Tsawwassen Mills mall in Delta, while two other pedestrians were injured in what police said appears to have been set off by a medical emergency.
Police said Wednesday the injured were treated at the scene by ambulance teams and transported to hospital.
“Preliminary information indicates the driver of the involved vehicle may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the collision,” the department said in a statement.
There was no ongoing public safety risk, and police said the crash was not related to a community walk to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation that was taking place nearby.
The incident prompted Tsawwassen First Nation to end the event.
“Tsawwassen First Nation is deeply saddened to confirm that an incident occurred during today’s Truth and Reconciliation Walk,” it said in a statement issued Wednesday.
“We ask members of the public to avoid the area and allow responders to carry out their work.”
B.C. Emergency Health Services said it received a call at 10:31 a.m. Wednesday about a crash involving pedestrians at the mall and dispatched “a number of crews.”
Video posted online shows a truck against the mall’s exterior and police tape surrounding the area, along with ambulances and a helicopter in the parking lot.
By early afternoon, police tents had been set up around the crash site in front of a Boston Pizza restaurant beside one of the entrances to the shopping centre.
A black pickup truck towing an equipment trailer could be seen bearing the word “Alpine” on its front door, though police later covered the logo.
The vehicle’s front end was damaged.
NDP Leader David Eby told reporters at an unrelated event Wednesday marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation that the day is already a challenging one.
“We send all of our love to the people of Tsawwassen, Tsawwassen First Nation, and with respect and appreciation for the work that they’re doing now to support the community in the wake of this tragedy,” he said.
Delta Police statement: Delta Police are currently on scene of a serious motor vehicle collision that occurred in the parking lot at Tsawwassen Mills at approximately 10:25 a.m. this morning.
Preliminary information indicates the driver of the involved vehicle may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the collision. Four pedestrians were struck and, tragically, two people have died as a result of their injuries. The remaining injured individuals were treated at the scene by BC Emergency Health Services and transported to hospital.
Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic incident.
The incident is not related to the Truth and Reconciliation Walk that was taking place on Tsawwassen First Nation lands at the time. There is no ongoing risk to public safety.
The investigation remains in its early stages as officers work to determine all of the circumstances surrounding the collision.
