Mission – From his media release: My name is Norm MacLeod, and I’m proud to be running for Mission City Council in the Civic Election on October 17, 2026.
I’m running, because I believe Mission deserves practical, experienced leadership that puts residents first. My priorities are straightforward. Keeping our neighbourhoods safe, protecting and enhancing parks and recreation, ensuring responsible financial management, and making local government more transparent and accountable are what I will strive for as a Councillor.
Service has been the focus of my entire adult life—whether through emergency services, recreation, volunteerism, or charitable organizations. I believe public service is about listening, bringing people together, and making decisions that improve our community.
Mission has been home for most of my life. My family moved to West Heights in the late 1970s, and today I live in Cedar Valley with my wife and our two Chocolate Labs. Like many of you, I’ve watched our community grow and change, and I want to help ensure it remains a safe, vibrant, and affordable place to call home.
For 32, years, I had the privilege of serving our community as a firefighter. I began as a paid-on-call firefighter before becoming one of Mission’s first career firefighters. During my career, I served as Captain and later as Assistant Fire Chief where I was responsible for Operations, Training, Fire Prevention, and Emergency Management, I also served as Mission’s Emergency Program Coordinator. In 2020, I accepted the position of Deputy Fire Chief with White Rock Fire Rescue, where I served for four years before retiring. After 36 years in the fire service, I wanted to return to Mission.
During my time in the fire service, I also worked in Parks, Recreation and Culture. With nearly 25 years with the City of Abbotsford, and in positions with Mission, Vancouver, and Halifax, I learned the importance of teamwork, customer service, and creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy healthy, active lifestyles.
Volunteering has always been just as important as my career. I currently serve on the Board of the Fire Rescue International Training Association and have deployed to Latin America 15 times to help train firefighters. As Past President and a member of Burnaby Urban Search and Rescue, I deployed to Nepal and Türkiye to help following their devastating earthquakes. Additionally, since 2025, I have volunteered with Mission Search and Rescue in a Support Member role.
I was also honoured to ride four times in the Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley, helping raise funds and awareness for children and families affected by paediatric cancer. Today, I continue to support that important cause as a member of the Tour de Valley Organizing Committee and as tour mechanic.
For more than 10 years, I was, and continue to be, a proud member of Rotary, where I work alongside dedicated volunteers on projects that strengthen our communities. In 2023, I was honoured to receive the Paul Harris Fellow recognition for supporting recovery efforts in Türkiye.
Since 1988, I’ve supported, and continue to support, Muscular Dystrophy Canada and I currently sit as a member of the National Fire Fighter Relations Committee. I strongly support providing accessible recreation and inclusive community programs for our residents and visitors.
Since returning to Mission, I have been honoured to serve on the Mission Community Archives Advisory Committee and the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee. In 2026, I was deeply humbled to receive the City of Mission’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Throughout my career, I’ve learned that service leadership starts with listening. It means bringing people together, making informed decisions, and always remembering that public service is about serving the public.
As Mission continues to grow, I believe we need thoughtful planning that protects what people love about our community while preparing responsibly for the future.
That’s the approach I’ll bring to City Council.
Over the coming weeks and months, I’ll be out in our neighbourhoods listening to your ideas, concerns, and hopes for Mission’s future. I hope you’ll introduce yourself when you see me.
