Chilliwack – “Every politician has a best before date.” – Jason Lum to FVN’s Don Lehn circa 2019 during an interview.
While Jason Lum is not totally riding off into the sunset, he will step away as Chair of the FVRD – Fraser Valley Regional District.
Lum has served 8 one year terms, something almost unthinkable in this day and age of the political landscape.
Lum will remain as a Councilor for the City of Chilliwack. Lum is also the dad of a toddler and the parental pull is rather obvious.
Four years ago, he took a run at provincial politics, as an independent , yet losing Chilliwack-Kent to current MLA Kelli Paddon. (for the record, they remain on very good terms)
Lum said in the September 26 meeting of the FVRD that its time to step down and let someone else take the reigns. The Board will elect a new chair in November.
In a media release to FVN and chillTV: After 8 consecutive terms at the helm, Jason Lum has announced his retirement as Chair of the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD). Lum’s decision marks the end of an era defined by unprecedented growth, visionary leadership, regional collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to the residents of the Fraser Valley.
Lum first assumed the role of Chair in 2016 and has since overseen a period of significant change in the region. Under his leadership, the FVRD has strengthened its advocacy role in addressing critical regional issues such as emergency management, environmental sustainability, affordability, and addressing infrastructure gaps.
“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have served the people of the Fraser Valley over the past eight terms,” said Lum. “It has been an honor to work alongside dedicated colleagues, staff, and community members to improve the quality of life in our region. I believe that an important part of leadership is knowing when it is time to create space for others, just as I was given the opportunity to grow and challenge myself as a leader, I think the time has come to do the same for someone else.”
Throughout his tenure, Lum has been instrumental in forging partnerships with all levels of government, First Nations, and community organizations to tackle pressing issues facing the region. His leadership has been especially vital in navigating the challenges brought on by natural disasters, including floods, heat domes, and wildfires, which have tested the resilience of Fraser Valley communities.
Lum’s legacy is one of collaboration and forward-thinking policies that have helped build a stronger and more connected Fraser Valley. He leaves behind a solid foundation for future leaders to build upon, with a vision for continued progress.
The FVRD will begin the process of selecting a new Chair, with an election scheduled for the November meeting. Lum will continue to serve on the Board, and has pledged his support to ensure a smooth transition for the incoming leadership.
