VIA Rail Train Struck Debris Near Agassiz Causing Fuel Spill

Agassiz – On Friday evening March 1, at approximately 6:15 PM, VIA Rail Train 2 struck debris on the track near Agassiz.

The impact caused damage to the engine and some train cars.

None of the 121 passengers or crew members on board were injured in the incident, but the damage caused a fuel leak, and the train was not able to proceed .

The RCMP and the CP Police are investigating the incident, and since the leak happened on CP tracks, CP environment teams have been brought in to assess.

From the CP Rail Release to FVN: The safety of our passengers and staff is our top priority, and emergency services were immediately contacted to secure the scene. VIA Rail called in buses and all passengers were transported back to Vancouver, Kamloops and Jasper. We apologize for any inconvenience caused to our passengers.
