WVB: Cascades top MRU in five-set thriller to claim weekend sweep
A Saturday night thriller.
In a heated battle, the University of Fraser Valley Cascades women’s volleyball team downed the Mount Royal University Cougars 3-2 (25-11, 22-25, 25-12, 23-25, 9-15) in a game that went the distance at Kenyon Court.
Just as they did in Friday’s game, Mount Royal came out blazing hot and controlled the pace of the opening set. MRU served aces from Emma Boyd, Bronwynn Davies-Neira, Jessica Osczevski and Sydney Scatcherd, helping swing the momentum firmly in the home team’s favour. The Cougars were playing a resilient, no-quit style of volleyball, which carried them to another first-set win.
Cascades head coach Janelle Rozema needed her squad to start fresh for the second set and if the Cougars learned anything from Friday’s game, it’s to not let up against a team as powerful as UFV.
The Cougars move to 4-14 through 18 games in the Canada West season while UFV leaves Calgary with a 13-3 record.
The Cascades are back in action at home this Thursday and Friday, as they take on the Winnipeg Wesmen in a pair of games that were rescheduled from last weekend. Game times are set for 6 p.m. PT on Thursday, and 3 p.m. PT on Friday. Both matches are available live and on demand at Canada West TV.
MVB: Cascades drop three-setter to Cougars
A rocky game for the Cascades, a ferocious one for the Cougars.
The Mount Royal University Cougars men’s volleyball team completed the weekend sweep over the University of Fraser Valley Cascades with their second straight 3-0 win (25-17, 25-16, 25-16).
The Cascades are back in action next week to take on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in a pair of matches in Saskatoon. Both events can be seen live on Canada West TV.
“We need to get back to the drawing board with hopefully a full week of practices this week to prepare for Saskatchewan,” said Cascades head coach Nathan Bennett. “We’re looking forward to them next week.”
