UFV Sports Friday – Hoops and Volleyball Back At It After The Freeze

Fraser Valley – WVB: Lauren Attieh leads the way as Cascades shake off slow start to beat MRU in four sets

Lauren Attieh hit a match-leading 0.571 to lead the University of Fraser Valley Cascades women’s volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (20-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-18) over the Mount Royal University Cougars on Friday night.

Mount Royal looked locked in on their home floor to start the game. Despite being the underdog to the U SPORTS seventh-ranked Cascades, the Cougars were not intimidated and played some of their best volleyball to date in the first set to come out with the opening set win.

After dropping the first set, Fraser Valley settled in and rebounded to take the second.

The three Attieh sisters, Lauren, Gabrielle and Talia were all huge for the Cascades throughout the match, and helped their team even the set score at one.

The Cascades made it loud and clear that the first set is not how they play. UFV registered 17 kills in the third set, only committing three attacking errors. Cailin Bitter was consistent all the way through at setter, forming strong connections with all her weapons on offence and collecting 31 assists in the match.

The two teams go head-to-head once again on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT in Calgary.

All the action can be streamed live on Canada West TV.

MVB | Cougars take down Cascades in three

The Mount Royal University Cougars men’s volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-18, 25-19) over the visiting University of Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday night.

Mount Royal saw a huge rejuvenation to their lineup with Jacob van Geel making his return to play after sustaining an ankle injury on Nov. 25 against the University of Calgary and missing the next six games. The 2022-23 Canada West All-Star displayed no signs of rust and was dominant right from the start.

The Cougars and Cascades will rematch Saturday evening at 5 p.m. from MRU’s Kenyon Court.

WBB: Fourth quarter run puts Pandas past Cascades

The UFV Cascades women’s basketball team found themselves on the wrong end of a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter, and that proved to be the difference as the University of Alberta Pandas came out on top 63-56 in this rematch from last year’s Canada West quarterfinal.

The Cascades host the Pandas in the rematch on Saturday at the UFV Athletic Centre. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. and UFV Students attend for free with a valid student ID. Saturday’s matchup is also the Cascades’ annual Hall of Fame night where UFV will honour a pair of athletes as their 2024 inductees. Tickets can be purchased online at gocascades.ca/tickets, and the game can be seen live on canadawest.tv.

MBB: Early run helps Golden Bears past Cascades

The UFV Cascades men’s basketball team allowed a 16-4 run early in the first, and struggled to recover from the early hole as they fell to the University of Alberta Golden Bears 89-72 on Friday night.

The Cascades host the Golden Bears in the rematch on Saturday at the UFV Athletic Centre. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and UFV Students attend for free with a valid student ID. Saturday is also the Cascades’ annual Hall of Fame night where UFV will honour a pair of athletes as their 2024 inductees. Tickets can be purchased online at gocascades.ca/tickets, and the game can be seen live on canadawest.tv.
