Chilliwack/Vancouver/Victoria – The British Columbia Association of Chiefs of Police have issued a statement on Officers Wearing Body Cameras.
In part it reads: Recognizing British Columbians would benefit from a coordinated approach to the use of Body Worn Cameras (BWCs), the British Columbia Association of Chiefs of Police (BCACP) struck a Special Purpose Committee in 2021 to ensure consistency in procedures and alignment with BC Policing Standards across the province. “This is why the BCACP recognized the need to collaborate, consult and to ensure that operational policing standards and policies were consistent across all police agencies in British Columbia.”
Current Chilliwack Councilor Bud Mercer had a long career with the RCMP before he entered local politics. Mercer He was the Assistant Commissioner as well as Chief Operating Officer Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit Royal Canadian Mounted Police “E” Division.
Mercer acknowledges there is a lot of work ahead before body cameras are fitted for all police officers in BC. In an interview with FVN’s Don Lehn, he noted that it is a great idea and that every effort should be made to get technology and operational procedure “right”.
