Changes to BC Highway Patrol Mandate – Getting Back to Being Pro-Active and Letting Other Services Handle Highway Collision Calls

Fraser Valley – BCHP BC Highway Patrol will shift its sights to being more pro-active with tickets and roadside large vehicle inspections and monitoring impaired drivers.

This was first announced in February 2023 with the change of focus in September. Local police response (City Police and RCMP) will responsible for collisions on highways.

The confusion arose over the years as this was never the original mandate for BCHP. That mandate is now 30 years old although in areas like Chilliwack , BCHP has responded over the past 12 years. Again, that was never in the mandate, it simply evolved that way.

In the Fraser Valley, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Hope, Harrison Hot Springs and the Fraser Valley Regional District will be directly impacted.

Black Press reported that the Fraser Valley Regional District wrote a letter to Minister of Public Safety Mike Farnworth criticizing the lack of engagement with municipalities. At their last council meeting (June 5), the City of Mission also voted unanimously to write a similar letter to Farnworth. Black Press went on to say that Mission Mayor Paul Horn is very disappointed in this development.
