UFV Women’s Soccer – Nekic’s Goal Lifts Cascades Past SFU in Preseason Finale

Fraser Valley (Dan Kinvig) – The University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team closed out its exhibition schedule on a winning note, defeating Simon Fraser University 1-0 on Saturday evening in Burnaby.

Taylor Nekic’s goal in the 85th minute was the difference as the Cascades improved to 3-1 against university opponents in the preseason, including two wins vs. SFU. Back on Aug. 24, the UFV squad topped SFU by a matching 1-0 score.

The Cascades soccer teams open Canada West conference play next weekend, hosting the Victoria Vikes on Friday (women 5:30 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Sunday (women 1 p.m., men 3 p.m.) at Rotary Stadium.

The Cascades out-shot SFU 12-9 on the night, and earned six corners to the hosts’ three.

The game-winner came off one of those corners, from the foot of Amy Connorton, and fourth-year defender Nekic rose to head the ball into the bottom left corner.

Goalkeepers Joven Sandhu and Andrea Perkovic shared the shutout, each playing a half.
