Chilliwack – Cyclists of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to take to bike lanes and trails this spring. GoByBikeBC Week is a celebratory week, providing a free opportunity to ride your bike to school, to work or just to clear your mind or take a break from zoom. Just ride your bike, log your kms and win prizes.
Local advocacy group Cycle Chilliwack has announced they will be facilitating GoByBikeBC week in Chilliwack, May 31 – June 6 with Cycle Chilliwack Co-Chairs Janice Balakshin, Jennifer Douglas and David Swankey organizing local engagement this year.
“Go By Bike week provides an opportunity to showcase new and improved bike infrastructure around town while also working to bring community together to promote health, wellness, sustainability and of course biking” stated Swankey. Expanding on how these routes would be identified and promoted, Swankey pointed both to the City of Chilliwack’s new Cycling Guide and to the online bike bingo sheet Cycle Chilliwack is producing to encourage ridership on specific routes.
This is not the first year GoByBikeBC week has been hosted in Chilliwack, but it is the first time Cycle Chilliwack has stepped forward to organize. “We had funds in place last year and plans were well underway but COVID prevented us from moving forward” said Douglas, “we’re very excited to follow through on some of those intentions this year”
“We’re encouraging cyclists of all ages and abilities to take part, registering online and logging their rides all week” added Balakshin. “There will be no events taking place to ensure everyone is safe, and to support compliance with public health guidelines”
Previously organized under the banner Bike to Work and Bike to School Week, the province wide campaign continues to expand its footprint in communities across the province.
