New Art at Mission Leisure Centre Pool

Mission — A new public art project dubbed as “Atlantis” has been completed at the Mission Leisure
Centre pool featuring an octopus and friends hanging above and around the teach pool.

The original artwork was composed during the COVID-19 pool closure and completed upon the re-
opening of the pool at the end of 2020. The artwork includes an Octopus hanging from the ceiling, a tot slide with sculpted seahorses, coral covered pillars and several other fish brought to life through
detailed air brush work.

The octopus was selected as the main feature for its fascinating traits, in fact the Giant Pacific Octopus is
thought to be very intelligent and has 3 hearts, nine brains, eight arms, blue blood and is incredibly
flexible. They swim gracefully with ease and release their ink to camouflage themselves or as a defense
mechanism.

This project would not have been complete without the help from residents to name the octopus in a
contest held on Facebook by Parks, Recreation & Culture. There were numerous entries submitted and
the selected name is ‘Inky’. Inky was submitted by 2 individuals, Mat Lapointe and Callen for
FarmingFamilyof5, who will receive a swimming prize pack for the pool. Thank you to everyone who
participated.
