Manitoba Metis Federation Wants To Break With National Council – BC Metis Association Staying Put

Winnipeg (with files from APTN) – The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is ready to break from National Council (MNC). They have taken issue with Ontario , who they claim, allows people to wrongly claim a Metis identity.

A lengthy resolution (which can be found here) was unanimously passed at the MMF’s annual meeting held in Winnipeg over the weekend, saying they’d leave the MNC and start a new national Metis Nation organization if MNC can’t find a resolution with the Metis Nation of Ontario (MNO) over citizenship.

There’s no timeline for when the MMF might cut itself off from MNC if the dispute over Ontario continues.

In the Eastern Fraser Valley, the Chilliwack Metis Association was following this issue closely. Metis and Sto:lo elder Louis De Jaeger told FVN and chillTV, that discussions were “spirited” among his colleagues.

The Métis Nation BC Annual General Meeting was recently held in Prince George (September 13).
