Abby To Receive New $25M Elementary School

Abbotsford – The land was purchased by the Abbotsford School District years ago and since the, the parcel of land has just sat there. Empty. No sounds of kids screaming in the playground. That will soon end.

The Ministry of Education is providing up to $24.71 million for a new 460-seat kindergarten to Grade 5 elementary school, while the Abbotsford School District is contributing $2.5 million for a total budget of $27.21 million. The new elementary school is needed to serve Abbotsford students In Eagle Mountain as more families are moving into the area. Construction will begin in fall 2020 and is expected to be completed for September 2022. 

The new school will include a neighbourhood learning centre that will also give families access to additional child care spaces through two dedicated daycare rooms.

“We are very pleased to have a new school coming to the Abbotsford School District,” said Stan Petersen, board chair, Abbotsford School District. “Abbotsford has experienced exceptional growth over the last decade, and we require a new school to alleviate high capacity and projected future enrolment in the Eagle Mountain neighbourhood. We look forward to providing students and families with a modern and innovative learning space.”
