BC Transit, First Canada Trying To Avert Valley Transit Strike

Fraser Valley – BC Transit and the operating company First Canada, are in talks to try an avert a strike by Fraser Valley Bus Drivers.

Shellene McConnell, with BC Transit told FVN that talks have been underway to bypass any job action. From their standpoint, BC Transit wanted to make clear :

·         BC Transit is not responsible for the terms of First Canada’s collective agreement.

·         At this time we remain optimistic that First Canada and the union can come to a fair and reasonable settlement

·         Please note that if job action occurs that affects bus service, First Canada and the union will be required to maintain essential service levels for medical appointments.

o   While discussions continue on the exact essential service levels, previous examples including offering service for those needed dialysis, cancer care, and customers with multiple sclerosis going to therapy.

·         To respect the negotiating process, further questions will need to be directed to First Canada and the union.

Brian Bickley with First Transit/CUPE, said that talks continue with their employer, and that for the time being, bus drivers won’t wear their uniforms.

A memorandum of understanding for a new package is being drawn up and should be presented to their members by November 4.

Bickley did not go into details of what was in that package.

Bus service continues as scheduled.
