Keep Clear Street Drains, Basins Near Your Home

Fraser Valley – You have by now, seen the flooding from the flash rain storm that nailed parts of Vancouver late Sunday. What complicated the issue were all the leaves that plugged up street drains and basins.

The leaves are falling in droves now and that can make for a major flooding hazard when the rains come down. And they will.

In a number of cities from Vancouver to Chilliwack, have programs called Adopt a Basin.

In a nutshell:

  • Looking at the curb in front of your home today to see if there is a catch basin close by that you could help keep clear.
  • During the autumn leaf fall or winter storms, clear catch basins in front of your home if you are able. Help your neighbours if they are not able.
  • If possible, avoid parking over street drains to allow street sweepers and snow plows to clear to the curb during fall and winter.

A cleaner street will also make Halloween Trick Or Treaters a little more comfortable. Puddle jumping isn’t fun for adults.. lol.
