REVIEW – John Fogerty At Abbotsford Centre (VIDEO)

Abbotsford – One thing you know for sure with a John Fogerty concert, you’ll always get the hits.

The question will be, what “didn’t” he play?

Outside of Midnight Special, and 110 in the Shade, he pretty much covered it all in a 2 hour+ show on Sunday night. Fogerty took care of his CCR days, the solo years and a couple of surprises including a recently penned song with Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top called Holy Grail.

The nine piece backing band, with a three man horn section took you through Fogerty’s CCR flashbacks from Woodstock (Who’ll Stop The Rain” and his short lived military career ( Yes he did serve. He played a patriot song, Hot Rod Heart, co-written with Brad Paisley), and homage paid to the infamous amp that has been with him since that fateful day in 1969, playing for 400,000 at Yasgur’s Farm.

The stories were all there including getting his “Woodstock” guitar back after 40 some odd years.

Many sitting around me were in wonder and awe — This guy can play guitar!  Including some tapping that showed who Eddie Van Halen learned from, while stealing a few Hendrix-like licks in the meantime.

His son Shane is no slouch on the axe, either. His other son, Tyler, came out to sing for a few songs, but his geeky Elvis inspired dance moves, with red jump suit, seemed a little awkward.

Green River, Travellin’ Band (show opener) Old Man Down The Road and jamming with Heard It Through The Grapevine and Keep On Chooglin’ allowed the band to stretch out and show their chops.

The horn section ripped through a nasty version of Proud Mary then topped it off with a New Orleans medley that would make Dr. John proud, including When The Saints Go Marching In…which then went into the crowd only to come back to the stage for a rousing finish.

Yes, the baseball guitar came out for Centerfield.

The close to SRO crowd at the Abbotsford Centre left exhausted. You were rocked and brought along for a great old story time from one of the true masters of the craft. While the majority of the crown were..well.. thinning hair and slightly expanding waste lines, there were a smattering of younger rockers, who paid attention to a living piece of history.

Fogerty danced around the stage as a man possessed. Remember, he’s 73, with more energy than young talent who are a third of his age.

Fogerty is a living legend and when he comes around again, spend the money. You’ll understand why he is…a legend.
