UPDATE – Chilliwack Court House Evacuated – Possible Threat – Suspect Sought

Chilliwack -FEBRUARY 28 UPDATE – Chilliwack RCMP are looking for suspects after the Chilliwack Courthouse was evacuated On Tuesday after a Possible threat.

A suspicious item was located outside the courthouse after an initial sweep of the area. Chilliwack RCMP and Sheriffs secured the area and evacuated a number of neighbouring businesses to await the arrival of the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU).
 
EDU determined the item was not a risk to public safety. The businesses and courthouse have now returned to regular business.
 
Follow up investigation into the source of the threat is being done by the Chilliwack RCMP with assistance from the RCMP Lower Mainland Forensic Identification Section. Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying subjects associated to a vehicle of interest (photo below). The vehicle is described as an older model, bluish green, four-door sedan, with a sun roof.

ORIGINAL STORY FEBRUARY 27 – Around 2:30PM Tuesday afternoon, Police and other EMS vehicles were at the standby as the Chilliwack Court House was evacuated.

There were social media posts directed to FVN stating that it was a bomb threat but that has not been confirmed by RCMP.

Traffic was a mess downtown for a couple of hours.

RCMP call it an ‘unspecified threat.”

Staff Sgt. Steve Vrolyk told media, “At this point in time, we do have investigators on scene and we have evacuated the building [out of] an abundance of caution while we follow up.”

Vrolyk says police dogs and other resources were called in.

A thin metal case was found behind the courthouse near the back of the Chilliwack Bowling Lanes.

As of 9:30PM, Chilliwack Mounties continued to have a cruiser with full lights turned to the front of the court house.
